If you’ve already scoured your closet and emptied your garage, you may think your spring cleaning is over.

Think again.

The same way you would give your house a once over, so should you purge your computer. Spring cleaning will help your computer run more efficiently, can help protect you from viruses, and offers also a good opportunity to protect important files.

People keep valuable information, including photographs, on their computer but don’t back it up as they should, said Steve Yates, owner of Computer Renaissance in Springfield.

"If they lose all that, all their memories are gone forever," Yates said. "They need to protect it as if they were going to lose it tomorrow."

There are three things you should think about when spring cleaning your computer, said Luke M. Ford, chief executive officer of My Computer Works, a company in Phoenix, that offers network support across the nation. Read the rest of this entry »

The number of UK companies infected by malware has fallen by 60 per cent over the past two years, according to a survey by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), on behalf of the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform.

But for two-thirds of the companies affected, malware caused their worst information security breach of the year. Spyware now accounts for one in six of the worst infections, suggesting attacks are becoming less frequent but more sophisticated.

Companies have become aware of the threat of viruses, according to PwC partner Chris Potter.

"If there is one area of security where UK plc has really got the message, it’s virus protection. Only a tiny minority of companies don’t take this area seriously," he said.

Only 14 per cent of UK companies reported a malware infection last year, down from 35 per cent two years ago when the last survey was carried out.

Less than half of very large businesses had an infection last year.

Corporate anti-virus defences have significantly improved, the survey found.

Ninety-eight per cent of firms have software to scan for spyware, up from 75 per cent two years ago.

Though not all Spyware is malicious they must be removed all the same. The reason being that they will ultimately expand the registry of the system and stall the programs and generally make the system unstable.

Some people believe that you may not always need to remove spyware because Spyware is not always malicious. There are many kinds of Spyware that can infect your PC. Most of them are, thankfully, not uploaded with malicious intent. But why take chances. First of all let us analyze how Spyware comes to get onto the system in the first place. People who browse the Internet come across many sites that offer free download. Clicking on these downloads may bring with it some program in the background or hidden from the user. This may be in the form of ActiveX controls or components. When we download certain programs the download program flashes a message requiring the user to allow the download of an ActiveX control without which the download will not work. This ActiveX control is registered in the CLSID files of the registry. Once the download is complete the ActiveX control stored as a .OCX file begins its stealthy work. Best Spyware removal programs are especially weary of ActiveX controls and remove any malicious looking .OCX files. Read the rest of this entry »

Spyware has a lot of side effects of the registry. One of the greatest drawbacks is the slowing down of the system. This process will continue until the registry is cleaned with a registry cleaner.

If you have browsed the Internet for a substantial number of hours it is guaranteed that you have downloaded some sort of Spyware to your system, albeit inadvertently. That is the reason it is called Spyware. If it made itself known it would not be spying. Spyware is not illegal software. It is downloaded with the ‘permission’ of the user. Once the Spyware downloads and installs itself it begins, first of all, to consolidate itself on the machine. It does this by entering its information in multiple parts of the registry. These entries can only be removed with Spyware removal utilities and there are many free anti Spyware and Adware removal tools available to do a satisfactory job for you. Question: I had this come up in my Computer Associates virus check a while back. I thought the CA program had eliminated it as I haven’t seen it again in a few months after several runs of CAAV. Suddenly it popped up again. Is this something related to an e-mail I might have which hasn’t been opened yet? Why didn’t my CA anti-virus program delete it rather than tell me I had it? Part of the "messagestore\inbox.imm" is in "file name" location. Read the rest of this entry »
